An uncommon perennial from South Africa that will look striking in a sunny border. It forms a basal rosette of long green thistle-like leaves from which arise rather splendid, thick, thistly stems. In late summer these bear unusual, beautiful sunflower like pale purple flowers with dark purple centres, each three inches or so across.
Pollinator friendly, they also make a stunning cut flower fresh or dried. Drought resistant and long-blooming, Berkheya thrive in locations with fertile soil on the dry side, wherever drainage is excellent.
