Monarda didyma is an herbaceous perennial forming a clump of erect stems bearing aromatic, lance-shaped or ovate leaves. Very distinctive flower heads made up of curving tube-shaped flowers pealing out from the centre, creating a shaggy dome of petals. This variety has showy 2-lipped deep red flowers 3 - 4 cms in length in one or two dense terminal whorls.
Flowers from mid to late summer and blooms almost continuously if regularly deadheaded. RHS Perfect for Pollinators status so excellent for attracting bees and other pollinators into the garden. Good for cut flowers. Can be divided between March to May, roughly every 3 years.
An aromatic herb in the mint Lamiaceae family, the crushed leaves of all species give off a spicy, fragrant essential oil, with didyma containing the highest oil concentration of all. Leaves can be picked for potpourri or dried and brewed into an aromatic tea. The leaves and flowers are edible raw or cooked and good for flavouring salads and cooked foods or as an attractive garnish in salads.
