An excellent oxygenating plant Red Stem has vivid red stems and feathery, green whorls of foliage that add texture and colour to smaller ponds. This plant helps oxygenate the water and competes with algae by absorbing excess nutrients. It grows submerged as well as floating above the surface providing excellent cover and spawning areas for fish, amphibians and invertebrates. Relatively low-maintenance and requiring minimal aftercare, if excessive growth occurs it can be pruned or removed as needed to maintain the desired appearance and size. Red Stem can be grown in boggy soils or submerged in the margins of ponds, with the crown positioned up to a maximum depth of 25 cms (10 in) below the water surface.
Red Stem can thrive in either full sun or partial shade. It is borderline hardy so may need some protection from frost in colder areas.
Approx height and spread: 20 x 30 cms
Please note that the red-stem species of Parrot's Feather (Myriophyllum rubricaule) is the non-invasive form and is available for sale under UK law.
