Christmas Box or Sweet Box, is a dense, Winter-flowering evergreen shrub, bearing tiny sweetly scented white flowers, in contrast to its dark green glossy leaves. The heady honey like fragrance carries some distance and brightens winter days between December and February. Flowers are followed by ornamental black berries that can last throughout the year.
It is very tolerant of shade and is therefore perfect for growing in a woodland border or shady corner, where its fragrance can be enjoyed throughout Winter. They are easy to grow, somewhat drought tolerant and, being fairly low growing at 60-80cm, they even make good shrubs for patio pots where the fragrance can be enjoyed. Can also be grown as a low hedge. Can be pruned after flowering.
Grow Sarcococca confusa in moist but well-drained soil in shade or semi shade.
