Astilbe are reliable rhizomatous herbaceous perennials with attractive divided leaves and erect plume-like blooms between July and September. 'Montgomery' has huge plumes of dark magenta red flowers in dense pyramidal clusters, with lush fern-like foliage which emerges with bronze-red tints and matures to a deep dark green. Forms an attractive clump which looks particularly good when paired with white flowering plants. The old, brown flower-heads remain attractive in autumn. Very pest resistant and requires no maintenance before being cut completely back in the autumn to allow new shoots in the spring. Likes full sun or partial shade and not fussy on soil. Good for cut or dried flowers.
