Astilbe are reliable rhizomatous herbaceous perennials with attractive divided leaves and erect plume-like blooms between July and September. 'Sprite' is one of the smaller varieties with plumes of light pink flowers in dense pyramidal clusters, with glossy lobed mid-green foliage. Forms an attractive clump which looks good in borders or containers. The old, brown flower-heads remain attractive in autumn extending the period of interest. Very pest resistant and requires no maintenance before being cut completely back in the autumn to allow new shoots in the spring. Likes full sun or partial shade and not fussy on soil. Good for cut or dried flowers and also around (but not in) ponds.
